Words by my mother.

You know, I believe that fashion needs novelty. They’ve relaunching bell-bottoms, sequin dresses—revisiting trends over and over—but Africa has always been forgotten, hidden, and underestimated.

Now, fashion is becoming more cultural and traditional, which is exactly what people are seeking. They want something new. That’s why we’re going back to the roots of where it all started. I truly believe that with an open mindset, we can achieve a lot in fashion. We have the power to influence mentalities and guide fashion in a new and meaningful direction. That’s the key to it all.

"In the photo, dated 1982, it's her first day in Paris after leaving Dakar. The loincloth skirt she's wearing was bequeathed to her by my grandmother when she married. According to tradition, she had to wear it for three days when she arrived in Paris. The top is woven silk."

"Tu sais, je crois que la mode a besoin de nouveautés. Ils ont renouvelé les pattes d’éléphant, les robes en sequins, ils ont tout fait le tour 20 millions de fois et l’Afrique a toujours été oubliée, cachée, sous-estimée.

Maintenant, la mode est devenue beaucoup plus culturelle, traditionnelle, et c’est ce que les gens cherchent. Ils ont envie de changement. Voilà tout. Et on retourne là où tout a commencé. C’est pour ça que je crois que si les gens ont un état d’esprit ouvert, on peut faire beaucoup de choses. Dans la mode, on peut changer beaucoup de choses.

Les mentalités et la mode elle-même peuvent évoluer dans le bon sens que nous lui aurons donné, voilà, c’est ça en fait."

"Sur la photo, daté de 1982, c'est son premier jour à Paris après avoir quitté Dakar. La jupe en pagne qu'elle porte lui a été léguée par ma grand-mère lors de son mariage. Selon la tradition, elle devait la porter pendant trois jours à son arrivée à Paris. Le haut est en soie tissée."
